Undersized for a log, but mammoth for a tree branch, the obstruction along the path was crude at best. That Card and Perk had managed to roll it off the overhang and into position was a minor miracle. “It’s that +2 Body Stat bonus from my Class,” the dwarf had boasted, mockflexing her stout arms. “Brings me up to six total.” She was perched atop the log, feet dangling several inches off the ground, as she kept her arms folded over her chest, staring down the nearest outrider for the trade caravan. Card knew it was a trade caravan, because his Lightning Calculator Feature was triggering without any active effort on his part: six carts loaded with goods, twelve horses for towing, another six for armed outriders. Another pair for the unarmed women who seemed to be in charge, judging by everyone else’s deference. At a guess, Ally, Min-Max, and the librarian were in one of the carts to the rear that stretched around a bend in the path. The lead rider, flanked by a quartet of agitated hounds, frowned down his nose at him.

“What is this, then?”

Card threw a glance back. “What, that? A log, I’d reckon.”

The outrider sneered and threw up a hand, his fingers dancing through a complicated set of signals. Behind him, the carts ground to a halt.

Moments later, the caravan leader rode forward at a brisk pace. She had an evenness to her demeanor, paired with the weathered features, that suggested she’d seen it all. Not two strides behind rode a finely dressed, ageless, yet cold and unyielding force of personality, straight out of a fantasy villain compendium. A Faction Boss NPC, maybe. At the very least, a Lieutenant of some variety.

The pair drew to a stop beside the outrider.

“What seems to be the hold-up?” demanded the lead rider, a staccato of command in an otherwise flat delivery. He’d guessed correctly—she was in charge of this caravan.

“Roadblock,” reported the outrider.

“This wasn’t here earlier.” Calculating eyes raked over the log, then in equal measures, Card and the dwarf. “The two of you managed this?” She sounded almost impressed.

Card shrugged, holding out his hands apologetically. “Afraid so, ma’am.”

“Becca Lissell,” she said with a hint of reprimand. “I could snap my fingers and our dogs would tear you to bits. You hardly have the look of bandits, if you don’t mind me saying so.”

“Card,” he replied. She seemed to be waiting for more, so he added, “Just Card.”

“And I’m Perk,” chimed in his friend, cheerful as ever, as if they weren’t about to get cut down yet again.

“Odd names for odd companions.”

The other lady spoke, a casual edge to her cool alto, as if her voice might crack ice. “Don’t see many dwarves in Verdissen Forest. Aren’t you a bit far from home?”

Please don’t answer, Card pleaded silently, burying his urge to look back. Keep your gaze forward, confident. In an act of betrayal, his eyes flickered up to the looming tree and the branch where the bard had hidden himself.
